Magical Readathon O.W.L.s Wrap Up

Hello! Welcome to another Magical Readathon post. This time i’m happy to announce that I completed all my required O.W.L.s! If you didn’t read my O.W.L.s TBR post, here’s a little recap:

House: Ravenclaw 💙
Career chosen: Curse Breaker ⚡
Required O.W.L.s: Ancient Runes, Aritmancy, Charms, Defence Against the Dark Arts, Potions and Transfiguration

I didn’t make “owl post” reviews or weekly updates because (besides finding out pretty late people were doing this) I didn’t want to do too many posts and then don’t have anything to show in the wrap up.
Let’s begin!

MINI REVIEWS OWL POSTS

🦉 Potions: Book under 150 pages
Book Choice: Alice’s Adventures In Wonderland by Lewis Carroll (3 stars)

This was the first book I read for this readathon and you had no idea of how much I struggled finding a book with less than 150 pages. I had a good time reading this classic, which I’ve never read before. Now I know that I prefer the movies, because even if I had a good time reading it and it made me laugh a lot, many things lacked sense and the ending left me a little disappointed.

🦉 Ancient Runes: Heart on the cover on in the title.
Book Choice: The Friend Zone by Abby Jimenez (3.5 stars)

I had mixed feelings about this one. While it made me laugh a lot and the friendship between the main characters was so unique and well-written, the sensitive topics included in the book weren’t treated properly. I made a full review on this book and you can read it here.

🦉 Arithmancy: Read something outside your favorite genre
Book Choice: Stalking Jack the Ripper by Kerri Maniscalco (4 stars)

I really enjoyed reading Audrey and Thomas’ adventures trying to find out who the killer was. The eery vibes that this has actually take you into the story, I was fascinated by Audrey’s passion for medicina forense and Thomas stole my heart with his brilliant mind. However, I gave it four stars because the mystery was kind of predictable and I would’ve like being more surprise at the end.

🦉 Defence Against The Dark Arts: Book set at the sea/coast
Book Choice: The Summer I Drowned by Taylor Hale (4 stars)

When the readathon started I’d just been approved for this ARC so it was the perfect pick for this class. This is a very mysterious and atmospheric book that features shocking plot twists, well developed characters and just the right amount of romance. I made a full review of it and you can read it here.

🦉 Charms: White cover
Book Choice: A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder by Holly Jackson (5 stars)

I read this book so fast is not even funny. I think that this is a thriller everyone should read. The story is told in a very original format, including interview transcripts, text messages and “production logs” made by the main character, Pip, who’s trying to uncover the mystery behind Andie Bell’s murder. I loved how the author slowly put the pieces together and left me shocked at the ending, when the mystery was finally solved. I also liked that it didn’t lose the main focus of the book by trying to include romance in it, as many authors do sometimes.

🦉 Transfiguration: Book that includes shapeshifting
Book Choice: Spin the Dawn by Elizabeth Lim

I didn’t know what to expect of a Mulan/Project Runway crossover, so I kind of went into this book blindly. This book surprised me in a very positive way. So many things happened in so few pages (a little less than four-hundred) yet the events didn’t felt rushed. The mythology and folkore included in Spin the Dawn is marvelous, and I loved the main characters. Soon i’m going to be doing a full review on this.

So, these were all my O.W.L.s! I can’t wait for the next part of this readathon later in the year, I had so much fun completing all my classes, seeing other people complete theirs, and seeing all the great games and quizzes that the readathon’s page put up on Twitter. I’m seriously impressed by the amount of work put into this readathon.

  4. Congratulations on finishing! I actually think I liked the book Alice in Wonderland a bit more. But I love the movies just as much. I love how nonsensical it is but it’s been a long time since I read them.

    1. Thanks!
And yes, it is very nonsensical. It made the story really funny to read. Most of the time I was like “I can’t believe these characters” 😂 but the movies are a great part of my childhood and I hold them close to my heart😊
