Mid Year Book Freak Out Tag 2020

Hey everyone! Though a bit late, here I am with the Mid-Year Book Freak Out Tag! This is my first time doing it and I’m very excited to take a look back and reflect on what I read during the first time of the year. Let’s begin!

BEST BOOK YOU’VE READ SO FAR IN 2020

THE SEVEN HUSBANDS OF EVELYN HUGO by TAYLOR JENKINS REID – Yes… this is me mentioning this book yet again in one of my posts. Mind your business.

This was the first book I read in the year and it stole my heart completely. The rawness of it, the originality and the deep messages in it made of this book one of my all-time favorites. You can see more about me fangirling over this book in my post, 5 reasons to read Evelyn Hugo.

BEST SEQUEL YOU’VE READ SO FAR IN 2020

UNRAVEL THE DUSK by ELIZABETH LIM – This is the sequel to Spin the Dawn, and I can say it was even better than what I anticipated (believe me when I say the hype was real). Lim has an unique writing style that makes you feel as if you’re watching a movie while reading her epic stories, and this was just… amazing. You can read my review of it here.

NEW RELEASE YOU HAVEN’T READ YET BUT YOU WANT TO

FOREST OF SOULS by LORI M. LEE – Do you see that cover??? I’m in love. I’ve wanted to read this one for a long time and hopefully I can do it soon, it’s very high on my TBR list!

MOST ANTICIPATED RELEASE FOR THE SECOND HALF OF THE YEAR

THE INVISIBLE LIFE OF ADDIE LARUE by V.E SCHWAB – God knows how much I’ve tried to get my hands on an ARC of this. This year I’ve become a fan of Schwab’s books and I cannot wait for this one, I mean, a girl that never dies but also can’t be remembered by anyone??? And suddenly someone does remember her??? Sign me up.

BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENT

IMAGINE ME by TAHEREH MAFI – I was indecisive between this one and Wilder Girls, but I choose this one because it was the one I was hyping up the most. This was the final book in the Shatter Me series and it was a complete mess. There was gore I wasn’t warned about, the plot was inexistent, there was this weird thing going on between the main character and her love interest’s father… and the lack of Aaron Warner scenes just made me mad. I get mad just by thinking of this book, lol.

BIGGEST SURPRISE

THE HATING GAME by SALLY THORNE – I read this book on a whim. I was looking for book recommendations on Twitter and a now friend of mine recommend it, so I gave it a try and ended up loving it. The Hating Game is the kind of book to make you laugh, cry and make a real connection with the characters. It was the book that made me want to read more Contemporary Romance books, and a reread should happen soon!

FAVORITE NEW AUTHOR

LEAH JOHNSON – I recently read her book You Should See Me In A Crown and loved it. I really love her fresh and original way to deliver a message, mixing important topics with fun scenes and situations, and how she built the character that is Liz Lighty, who I think will inspire thousands of girls all over the world who get to know her and this book.

NEWEST FICTIONAL CRUSH

HUNT from HOUSE OF EARTH AND BLOOD – I loved his interaction with Bryce. He’s sassy, romantic and has a complex past that has shaped him into what he is in the present. I can’t wait to read more of him.

NEWEST FAVORITE CHARACTER

LILA BARD from A DARKER SHADE OF MAGIC – We love to see a powerful, smart woman. She stole my heart from her first appearance, and I kinda want to be like her when I grow up… minus the thief part, of course.

BOOK THAT MADE YOU CRY

ALL THE BRIGHT PLACES by JENNIFER NIVEN – At some point I started crying while reading this and didn’t stop until the end. This book talks about a topic very sensitive (suicide, depression), and while I think everyone can learn something from it, please be careful with the trigger warnings before you dive into it.

BOOK THAT MADE YOU HAPPY

JOSH AND HAZEL’S GUIDE TO NOT DATING by CHRISTINA LAUREN – I also almost chose this book for the biggest surprise question of the tag. If you want a book just to smile and have a good time while reading it, this is the one. No angst included.

FAVORITE BOOK TO FILM ADAPTATION

THE BOOK THIEF by MARKUS ZUSAK – Nope, I hadn’t seen this adaptation until earlier this year. Don’t ask why. But it totally captures the essence of the book and it couldn’t have been done better. And yes, I cried with that ending.

FAVORITE POST YOU’VE DONE THIS YEAR

Probably my Let People Read What They Want post because it was very spontaneous. I just sat down one day and write it down on one go, and even if I was really nervous to put a discussion post out there, it was pretty well received by the readers, which made me really happy 🙂

MOST BEAUTIFUL BOOK YOU BOUGHT THIS YEAR

FURYBORN by CLAIRE LEGRAND – I’m a sucker for black and gold covers, and the design in this one is so **heart eyes**, I’m obsessed.

WHAT BOOK DO YOU NEED TO READ BY THE END OF THE YEAR

i’m well aware it’s the spanish cover thank u

THE PRIORY OF THE ORANGE TREE by SAMANTHA SHANNON – I have made my personal goal to read this 800-page monster by the end of the year. Scared? Yes. Will that stop me? Probably. Hell no.

That’s all for this post! I had so much fun looking back at my reads for this first half of the year. Do you agree with some of my answers? Did any of these answers surprised you? Let me know in the comments!

  2. So happy that you loved Evelyn Hugo!! I read it and loved it so much I passed it around to all my non-bookish friends, and even they were totally hooked! (: Also hoping to read Spin the Dawn this fall, that sequel is gorgeous and I’ve heard so many great things about it! Hope you find just as many gems during the second half of the year! ❤️

  6. I haven’t been reading lately because my brain hates me, but one thing that I have cherished so far is my discovery of romance novels. I’m actually a big fan of love stories, but the books I usually read only have romance as a subplot. But this year, I decided to try out the Girl Meets Duke series by Tessa Dare (it’s a series of historical romance books following various girls meeting dukes and falling in love with them), and I LOVED IT. I love the angst, the characters, the humor, EVERYTHING. I’m actually planning to read more romances in the future. 😂

(Also, I really want to get a copy of Evelyn Hugo. I keep hearing good things about it. Alas, online bookstores don’t ship to my country currently due to COVID and I’m currently broke due to unemployment. But I will get a copy someday! I WILL!!!! 😂)

    1. Romance novels are amazing. I have read quite a few this year and though I prefer books with a different plot being the main focus, a swoony romance is always a good choice.

I hope you can get your hands on a copy of Evelyn Hugo real soon! It’s definitely one of my all time favorites😭

  7. I definitely cried while reading All The Bright Places, probably several times. 😭 I’m going to start reading You Should See Me In A Crown tomorrow! And I haven’t read Evelyn Hugo yet, but I want to, based on all the great things I’ve heard!
