Monthly Wrap Up: April 2020

Time goes by so fast, I can’t believe i’m already doing the second wrap up of the blog. Many things happened this month, and I decided to read more books outside my favorite genre (which is fantasy). I also participated for the very first time in a readathon, the Magical Readathon. More than half of the books I read this month were for my O.W.L.s classes, so if you want to see my thoughts in them, so can read my Magical Readathon O.W.L.s Wrap-Up post. Still, i’m going to do a quick summary of those books in here.

Imagine Me by Tahereh Mafi

Rating: 2 out of 5.

I’m sad to say this book disappointed me in many ways. It felt rushed, many scenes I think lacked sense. I didn’t like the plot line the author choose for this story, and I felt that Ella (Juliette)’s character gave many steps back, when the final installment of the series should’ve shown how much she grew and improved since the first book. Also, there were some violent scenes that triggered me and didn’t fit the style of the previous books. When I give my opinion on a book I like to point out the good aspects of it, but this time i’m not able to do so.

The Unhoneymooners by Christina Lauren

Rating: 3.5 out of 5.

I wanted to love this. I really wanted to, but I couldn’t. This book was really funny, I loved the setting, the dynamic between the main characters. The role that good/bad luck plays on it is interesting to read. But the trust issues everyone seemed to have with Olive became really annoying at the end. I wish the authors could have chose another conflict for this book.

Break Your Glass Slippers by Amanda Lovelace

Rating: 3 out of 5.

While i’m a big fan of Lovelace’s work and her “things that ha(u)nt bilogy” left me sobbing at the end, Break Your Glass Slippers lacked depth and rawness in most of its poems. I liked the “fairy godmother says” parts the most: it’s like an inner, better version of yourself talking to you. She has a very interesting way of sending a message through this book, which I think it was basically about loving yourself, knowing your worth and to move on past what hurts you. This book has many good things, but after reading To drink coffee with a ghost and being so moved by it, I just expected a little more.

The Happy Ever After Playlist by Abby Jimenez

Rating: 4 out of 5.

I adored this book, and it’s a real improvement from the previous one titled The Friend Zone, which I really enjoyed but this one… it just hits different. This is a spinoff for The Friend Zone, centered around Kristen’s best friend Sloan and her life after the events of the book mentioned before (which I won’t mention to avoid spoilers). I was very intrigued by Sloan already and loved to get a look inside her life and her recovery journey. Jason was also a wonderful male protagonist. The author also improved dealing with hard topics in the book, which was a complain on mine in TFZ. I’ll think of this story for a long time.

• I started hosting a book club for the very first time! The Twisted Tales Book Club is completely centered in retellings (specially diverse ones), and on May we’ll be reading and discussing Dark and Deepest Red by Anna-Marie McLemore. (p.s: is still not to late to join! just hit me up on my twitter)

Another thing I want to do is read most of my approved ARCs, and contemporary romance as that genre has been making me really happy lately. I also want to work on some other projects for the blog, since I want to include more sections like writing and blogging advice. I’d love to see what you think of it!
