TOP 10: Most intimidating books on my TBR

Hello and welcome to another one of my book talks! This time I want to show you some of my most intimidating reads. I’m not proud of it, but I procrastinate a lot. I’ve been posponing some of this books for even more than a year. So hopefully you have read some of them and let me know if I should be intimidated or not by them!

10. If We Were Villains by M.L Rio

I actually started this one. I read a chapter and a half, and decided to continue later but until now I haven’t. There’s just one thing that intimidates me of this book: the Shakespeare references. I haven’t read a single Shakespeare book, so I’m scared I will be too confused to enjoy it or understand it as much.

9. Some Kind of Perfect by K.B Ritchie

I know that, for those of you who read this epilogue book already, “intimidating” isn’t the first thing that comes to your minds when thinking about it. But i’ve grown attached to the core six characters of this series, that’s why I’m taking so long to finish it. I’m scared to read this book and say goodbye to them forever. Also, many people on book twitter didn’t seem to enjoy the spin-offs as much as the original series, and that doesn’t help much.

8. The Starless Sea by Erin Morgenstern

The main reason i’m intimidated by this is, as stupid as it may sound, because of how good it seems to be. I’ve heard wonderful things about this book, its metaphors and the worldbuilding. I’m planning to read this very soon, but i’m scared of not liking it as much as everyone seemed to!

7. Queen of Air and Darkness by Cassandra Clare

Similarly to the first spot on this list, this book intimidates me because I don’t feel ready for it. Even if I need to read Lord of Shadows first, a friend told me this book has some epic scenes where characters of all the sagas come together and my fangirl heart cannot handle that just yet. On the other side, I’ve seen reviews where people complain this wasn’t just what they expected for the ending of The Dark Artifices, so i’m a little scared to be disappointed.

6. Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo

So far, I’ve only read The Grisha trilogy by Leigh and I enjoyed it (yes… i’ve been posponing Six Of Crows. No, I don’t know why. Let’s ignore this). This is another dark academia book that I really wanted to read once it came out. I actually started it but put it down once I realised I spent like 3 days reading just THIRTY PAGES. People that have read this book insist that it’s not like any book wrote by this author before, that it’s an adult book and it’s not for everyone, but I wasn’t expecting it to be so SLOW. Despite that (and the very disturbing trigger warnings that scare the hell out of me) I want to give it another try someday in the future.

Pin this post!

5. The Secret History by Donna Tartt

I recently added this one to my Want To Read shelf on Goodreads. I’m a sucker for all things dark academia, so i’m excited for this one. Besides, i’ve seen in a lot on some blogs, with some very positive reviews. But it’s also a pretty long book (to be a mystery thriller, I think 500+ pages is pretty big), and i’m afraid that it becomes a heavy reading, which right now i’m not in the mood for. If you’ve read it please let me know what you think of it!

4. Sherlock Holmes: The Complete Collection by Arthur Conan Doyle

Who doesn’t know Sherlock Holmes? Whether you’ve read the books, saw the TV shows, seen the movies, or just heard about him at some point, everyone knows him and his adventures. I’ve been wanting to read this classic, but it’s over A THOUSAND pages. I’ll probably wait until fall when i’m really in the spooky mood to read it, because that’s the kind of vibe this compilation of books gives me.

3. The Poppy War by R.F Kuang

The reason why i’m intimidated by this (and most of the books on the list) is by how big this is. It has 644 pages, and i’ve seen in some reviews that it has little romance and lots of politics. Also, i’m kind of intimidated by the worldbuilding –while i’m really intrigued by a book set in Asia (or in an alternative universe inspired by it, i’m not sure yet) with ancient empires and things alike, i’m afraid some of the terms might confuse me. BUT, i’ve only heard good things about this book (my goodreads friends have all give it a 5 star rating), so I’ll definitely read this… some day.

2. It by Stephen King

Another one of the longest books on my TBR. A hardback version of this book might be a lethal weapon. I’ve heard from some booktubers that it’s a heavy reading (which doesn’t surprise me…) and even if I really wanted to read it when the film came out a couple years ago, it’s not on my current priorities.

1. Kingdom of Ash by Sarah J. Maas

The first place on this list! How on earth can I not be intimidated by this book??? It doesn’t only have 900+ pages, and SJM’s wonderfully complex and very detailed writing style, but it’s the ending to what might be my favorite book series ever. As of now i’ve only read four books + the prequel, but i’m dreading the day I start reading this one. I’M NOT READY.

Have you read some of these books before? What did you think about them? Do I have a reason to be intimidated by them or not? Let me know in the comments!

See you on the next post!

    1. Thank you! It means so much to me that you like my blog. Please search the trigger warnings of Ninth House before reading it if you will! It’s very important to be aware of them!

  1. I actually haven’t read any of these, but QoAaD is on mine with Lord of Shadows. I didn’t actually like Lady Midnight that much — not compared to all the other Shadowhunter books, at least. But, I definitely want to finish the series…All the books are just so big! I’m intimidated too 😬

    1. I know right! Sometimes I’m just not in the mood for a 700+ page book. I feel the same about Lady Midnight, even if I like the characters I don’t have the connection I had with the ones from tmi, tid and now The Last Hours.

  2. This is a great post! A few of these would definitely make it onto my list as well — especially the final books for Dark Artifices and Throne of Glass! I’ve been putting those two off since I got them and I even pre-ordered them 😂 The Secret History is another one that intimidates the heck out of me; probably because I’m not 100% convinced I jam with Tartt’s writing style. Even though these intimidate me I do look forward to reading them too lol

    1. That’s another one of the reasons the book intimidates me! I mean, is a book that came out in the 90s -and i haven’t read much books from those years. I don’t know if i’d like it or not, and it’s a lot of pages to be a mystery book!

    1. Is sad to see Ninth House doesn’t get faster 😕 if it’s that slow all the time maybe I won’t read it. About if we were villains, then perfect! I didn’t wanted to read shakespeare in order to read this book😅

  3. Omg, I’ve had The Secret History on my TBR for SO long & have put it off bc of the length too…which is honestly a ridiculous excuse bc I’ve since read multiple Cassie Clare books that are WAY longer & I didn’t even bat an eyelash 😂

I just don’t know if I can bring myself to read Kingdom of Ash – it’s been so long since I’ve read the other books, and I no longer care for SJM’s writing or the characters in ToG 🙊 BUT I’VE COME SO FAR & my stubborness REFUSES to let me leave a series unfinished 😂

    1. Exactly! I actually read House Of Earth and Blood last month and it took me literally 5 days to finish it, even with the heavy descriptions and being in english when this isn’t even my native language -but I guess the hype does wonders sometimes. Still, the secret history scares me a little😂
How bad that you feel that way about sjm’s writing 😔 she’s actually one of my favorite authors and I promise the books in tog get better as you make your way through the story! I recently read Queen of Shadows and totally adored it💖

  4. not to be pushy but YOU GOT TO READ THE POPPY WAR. it took me quite awhile to read the book too. however, i’m putting off reading the dragon republic because it’s huge (and because i’m thinking about buying the physical book) so we’re on the same boat.

  5. OMG Some Kind of Perfect by K.B Ritchie was the BEST book ever – I can’t even tell you how much I appreciate authors that go the extra mile for their readers.

I actually read some of Sherlock Holmes: The Complete Collection by Arthur Conan Doyle – I enjoyed them, but I could only read a couple stories at a time. And make it a WIP kind of reading experience.

It by Stephen King and anything by Donna Tartt would be extremely intimidating for me.

I’m still making my way through Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo, or I should say I’ll get back to it when I pick it up again. I stopped before the 100page point that everyone says will change the pace of the book.

And The Starless Sea by Erin Morgenstern is still on my tbr – no idea when I’ll ever get to it.

    1. I’m 100% certain i’ll love Some Kind Of Perfect, but I don’t want the adventure to end just yet! 😅
About Sherlock Holmes, yes, I guess that would be a really slow read as I think i’d have to read some stories and then take a break, and so on until i finish it.
I’ve also been told that Ninth House doesn’t get any less slow :/

      1. oh no, that’s a bummer about Ninth House – I bought a special edition too – lol

  6. This is an awesome list! I share your interest/love for dark academia and as such, several of these are also on my TBR as well! I did make it through Ninth House, but honestly, probably only because I listened to the audiobook. I also have tried to begin both If We Were Villains and It but have not been successful with either one as of yet.

    1. Thank you!
I have never tried to start it, just thinking about how long it is terrifies me 😅 I hope I will someday though. And about Ninth House, yes, sometimes with audiobooks the reading (or listening) process it’s less slow and heavy

  7. Oh I love this list! I am so intimidated by The Starless Sea as well. I’ve heard amazing things about this book, but I feel like the author’s writing is something I have to be in the mood for, to really get into, so…. I’m waiting hahahaha 🙂

    1. Exactly! Right now I think I’m not in the mood for plot-heavy books full of hidden messages and metaphors and all that. I’m more in the fluffy romance side of literature this month😅 but I’m still really looking foward to The Starless Sea someday!

  8. Ahh, just thinking about reading some of these books stresses me out 😅. Everything by Stephen King intrigues me, but also terrifies me hahaha. And yes! Dark academia is so cool, but Donna Tart intimidates me too 😂.

    1. 20 hours!!! Holy cow. I think on paperback it’s 600+ pages if I’m not wrong, so definitely it’s a long read! Don’t know how the pacing might be, though. And ugh, I want to read the Poppy War so much but I think right now I’m not on the mood for it😔

  9. Great post and I’m not surprised you’re intimidated by some of these as some are quite long as well as being a bit heavy, in terms of their subject matter etc. I think if you’re not in the headspace to tackle some heavier / more time consuming reads then I’d steer clear of The Secret History and Ninth House. The pacing in Ninth House is definitely quite slow and it nearly put me off too. I’ve read quite a few and a few are actually some of my favourite books – The Starless Sea, The Poppy War & If We Were Villains. I might be a bit biased haha but they’re so worth the read. I hope you really enjoy all of these books when you get around to reading them!

    1. Thank you for the advice, and for reading my post! I’ll definitely leave The Secret History and Ninth House on hold for a while. Right now I’m more in the contemporary romance kind of vibe, so I’ll stick to that for now I guess 😅 but The Poppy War is on my TBR for May!
